Antonia Banti, MSc, EBPI Administrative Support

In their role as EBPI Scientific Managers, Doreen Gille and Kelly Turner support EBPI researchers:

  1. develop strategies for third-party funding for their researcher programs (i.e., deciding what grants to apply for, which ones to skip) and
  2. prepare grant applications. They work with researchers throughout the entire process, including: confirming eligibility to apply for specific funds, determining whether the project idea is within the funder’s “scope” (i.e., is something the foundation will fund, in principle) developing the grant proposal (e.g., high-level editing, final copy editing).

Their goal is to support researchers in submitting high-quality proposals on-time (or early) with as little stress as possible.

How we support EBPhD students

Supporting your grant submissions

Doreen and Kelly will provide the above services to EBPhD students as well. If you have an idea for which you need funding, approach them to see what options are available to you. Twice a year they offer specific meetings for students applying for SNSF Post Doc Mobility and UZH Doc.Mobility grants.

Related events (for example):

  • Workshop: FUND-O-POLY, Player Tips! Proposal Preparation – from Idea to Submission
Acquiring competitive, third-party funding might seem like a dense, impenetrable forest for which there is no map. Good news! While at times tedious, there are defined steps and cycles to this ‘game.’
  • Applicant’s Meeting: UZH Doc.Mobility, SNSF PostDoc.Mobility (each November and May)
Covering (1) documents and (2) timelines for a stress-free submission. EBPI Scientific Managers are available for pre-application review as you develop your proposal.

Transferrable skills development, networking support, & document review

In addition to directing you to services offered via UZH Career Services, Doreen and Kelly help you determine how to best showcase your experience and expertise for potential employers on your CV and motivation letter. When appropriate, we can direct you to former EBPhD alumni with whom you might want to connect as you progress to the next stages of your career. Contact us if you need support.

Related efforts (for example):

  • Transferrable skills training (one per academic year)
Each year we organize a multi-day, hands-on skills training. For example, previous students have developed their skill and confidence delivering scientific talks after a 2-day intensive training a classically trained actor and coach. Students have learned techniques how to draft a scientific manuscript using a format that is manageable, repeatable, and delivers reliable results.
  • EBPhD Mentoring picnic (typically each June)
We assemble a group of faculty and advanced postdocs from the Zurich scientific community. As opposed to the one-way communication of a traditional panel format, a series of small group, structured conversations, provides EBPhD students the chance to beging more meaningful connections with local scientists.
  • Document review (as-needed)
We review your application package documents for a postdoc or employment position. Quite often, a second “pair of eyes” goes a long way to helping potential employers understand the skills and competencies you brought to the successful completion of your PhD.
